Is a GMAT Focus 705 enough for ISB and 1-year programs?
Targeting ISB and a couple of 1-year MBAs. Is 705 competitive, or should I push for 715+ before applying?

705 is a competitive score for ISB, though it sits slightly below ISB's reported mean of approximately 710–715 for recent cohorts. Here's a nuanced read:
For ISB specifically: ISB uses holistic review, and the score is one of several weighted factors. Rolling admissions means Round 1 timing is worth more than 10–15 extra points — an excellent Round 1 application at 705 outperforms a mediocre Round 2 application at 720. If the rest of your profile is strong (7+ years of quality work experience, clear leadership narrative, specific post-MBA goals, strong recommendations), apply at 705 in Round 1 rather than delaying.
For 1-year programs (INSEAD, LBS, HEC, IMD): these programs weight GMAT more heavily relative to work experience than ISB does, and their mean scores tend to be higher (720–730 range). Here, a 715+ matters more, especially for INSEAD.
Practical decision rule: check your practice test scores. If you're consistently hitting 715–720 in mocks, a short retake prep cycle (6–8 weeks) to push to 715 is worth it for top 1-year programs. If your practice scores hover at 700–710, a retake risks a similar or worse outcome — variability is real. In that case, invest the time in essays and interview prep instead.
One more factor: 705 with a strong Verbal score (85th percentile+) reads better than 705 with weak Verbal, since top programs care about communication skills. Check your section breakdown when deciding whether to retake.
